Budget cars are immensely popular in South Africa due to their small sizes, affordable prices and fuel efficiency. These vehicles all cost under R140 000 and don’t break the bank when it comes to running costs and fuel. The budget car market is incredibly competitive and there is a wide range of choices for consumers, so where does a buyer start to look?

Hopefully, this list will help. The top 10 most searched-for vehicles in the country is a good indication that the brands are doing something right. If other consumers are interested in these vehicles, then they should be a good purchase. The resale value of these vehicles is one of the main determining factors in their order of popularity.

The three leading budget cars in 2019

The data for these searches comes from AutoTrader.co.za and some of the results are unsurprising, to say the least. The most searched-for city car so far in 2019 is the Volkswagen Polo, by a long way. Polos have always been highly popular in South Africa, but the launch of the new generation Polo in 2018 has reinvigorated its appeal.

The VW Polo offers modern exterior design with a superb interior. The drivetrain has been widely applauded by the motoring community and it’s an all-round pleasant car to drive. The Polo will continue to lead the popularity charts for the foreseeable future, thanks to its incredible value for money.

In second place, the ever-popular Toyota Yaris takes another unsurprising position on the list. Toyota and VW have always vied for market share in South Africa. Motorists love the Yaris’s 1.5-litre VVT-i engine combines with a five-speed manual transmission. A few upgrades were released to the Yaris lineup in April 2019, including a better anti-theft system and a new rear park distance control system.

Third place in the budget car popularity poll goes to the Hyundai Grand i10. This car comes with a standard two-year or 30 000km service plan – a great hook for buyers who are constrained by their budget. By not having to worry about paying for services for two years, consumers tend to opt for brands that offer these sorts of benefits.
