August is Women’s Month in South Africa and we’d like to shed some light on the wonderful women at Formex. We spoke to Claudette Van Rooyen, one of our longest-serving employees, to gain some insight into her role and views of the industry. Claudette has been with Formex since 1999 and is a keen and hardworking member of the team; she is always willing to assist wherever she can.

Besides being a Jack-of-all-trades, Claudette is an operator, first aid technician and a SHE rep at Formex Industries. Helping out is in her nature and she is considered a mentor and friend by other staff members. Her impeccable sense of humour and loveable persona make Claudette a valuable role model for other women in the automotive industry; someone they can turn to for advice, guidance and a friendly chat.

Women’s roles in the automotive industry

Claudette believes that women can lean on one another in this traditionally male-dominated industry in order to grow from strength to strength. According to Claudette, by supporting one another, women will form a core pillar of success for the company and the South African manufacturing sector.

Her dedication to her role has inspired many other people at Formex. Claudette’s son joined the company as a tool setter and follows in his mother’s footsteps. Over the past two decades, Claudette has touched the lives of many she works with – a fact that her family can attest to and of which they can be incredibly proud.

To any young woman considering joining the South African automotive industry, Claudette offers the following advice; push yourself to further your skills and training – learn to promote yourself as a competent worker who can achieve anything. Women in the industry have proven themselves to be amazing welders, press operators, forklift operators and machining specialists.
