Our current customers are based in Europe and South Africa. Today it is a world-class supplier to the Automotive Industry of poly-V-pulley and door lock mechanisms and assemblies.

Baisch Engineering supplies OEM companies across the world with the highest quality standards required by the industry. Prices remain competitive thanks to continuous productivity improvements and cost control measures.

We are committed to developing quality-approved suppliers and a trained, informed and motivated workforce. Continuous research and development is applied to the forming process of our pulleys. We also maintain a level of profitability that allows for sustained growth and shareholder satisfaction.

Company History
Baisch Engineering was established in Jeppe, Johannesburg in 1967 by Hans Baisch, offering metal spinning and forming services to the lighting, electromotor and automotive industries.

In 1976, Baisch Engineering moved to its current premises. In 1980 and again in 1997, the factory was extended to cater for the growing business.

By 1977, the company was focusing solely on the automotive industry, supplying a wide range of pressed metal components to the South African industry.

In 1985, Baisch Engineering developed the technology for the manufacture of “V” pulleys which led to our current poly-v technology.

In 1990, Baisch Engineering obtained a license agreement from KIEKERT AG Germany to manufacture and assemble door lock systems for the automotive industry.

In 1997, the company became a single source supplier to major European car manufacturers and received its first door lock export contract for central locking systems.

The dawn of the new millennium saw Baisch Engineering become a single source supplier of mechanical door locks to a major European car manufacturer (GM – Opel Corsa).

In 2004, Baisch Engineering was sold as a private entity to Formex Industries, which forms part of the HCI Group of Companies. As such, it focuses on the automotive industry and boasts both a strong local customer base as well as growing markets in Europe.

In 2005, Baisch Engineering’s Door Lock Division was awarded the contract to supply door module assemblies JIS (Just in sequence) to DaimlerChrysler on its W204 project.

This facility officially began production in June 2007.

Size
Baisch Engineering operates out of premises situated in Spartan, Kempton Park, (near Johannesburg), South Africa. It has a modern factory facility and offices that cover 5 300m2 on 8000 m2 of land. The company’s employee base is 230.

The East London plant is located on the border of West Bank and Gately, approximately 400m from the Daimler Chrysler plant. Baisch, along with most of the other companies in the area, service Daimler Chrysler as first or second tier suppliers. The company operates from a business hub that includes Schenker, Delphi, Faurecia and Eberspächer. Given the fact that Daimler Chrysler is East London’s largest exporter, the plant is located in close proximity to the harbour.

Our Strengths
The Pulley Division operates as an independent division and is not reliant on any license / technical agreement.
All processes needed to manage projects are completed in-house. Our strengths lie in the following:
  • Strong technical support at conceptual stage to improve product design and reduce manufacturing costs.
  • The ability to design and manufacture pulleys to customer parametric requirements. This includes conducting FEA’s, endurance & load testing.
  • In-house manufacture of all required tooling to reduce project lead times and to ensure the highest quality tooling in order to produce the highest quality products
  • Flexibility is maintained in the manufacturing equipment & processes to ensure that:
  • Equipment utilisation is maximised, thereby reducing fixed manufacturing costs;
  • Ability to react quickly to fluctuating customer demands; and
  • Ability to manufacture smaller batches economically.
  • Utilization of well maintained, high-tech equipment to ensure the highest quality products, together with consistent supply.
  • A strong, well trained and experienced team of personnel ensures continuous development and improvement of processes, while permanently striving toward excellence.
  • Excellent government support with the MIDP (Motor Industry Development Programme) to support and promote export programmes.

Door Module division
Well-established Baisch Engineering has added a new string to its bow. The company recently opened a facility in East London, located close to the Daimler Chrysler plant. This came about in 2005, when a partnership was formed between German company, KMI (a joint venture between Kiekert and Intier) and Baisch.

KMI won a tender to produce door modules on the Daimler Chrysler W204 project and sub-contracted the project to Baisch, who opened a branch in East London to service it.

Production began officially on 22 June 2007 and the project is scheduled to run for seven years. The state-of-the-art production line meets the Daimler Chrysler requirement of just-in-sequence manufacturing. Essentially, it operates according to a shift number, based on a number for each particular day for a specific vehicle in a particular sequence. Most vehicles produced at Daimler Chrysler are built to order.

Orders for door modules are sent to Baisch via EDI, an electronic data interchange. This ensures that Baisch builds modules according to vehicles on the production line, and these are delivered to Daimler Chrysler every hour via logistics partner, Schenker.

The sophisticated production system ensures that human error is eliminated. Once an order has been punched in, relevant parts bins are highlighted via flashing lights. Stringent checking systems ensure that no part will be signed off unless it is 100% correct. Only then can it be removed from the line and packed for despatch.

The company currently operates on a two shift system and employs 24 operators, two foremen and four office staff. However, as the project ramps up to full production, an increase in staff numbers is likely. Naturally, once the door lock division is brought on board at the East London facility, these numbers will once again increase.
